The 3D Maker Zone in Haarlem has opened a live lab for metal printing. For this purpose, it has teamed up with Swedish Freemelt, a manufacturer of electron beam powder bed fusion additive manufacturing systems. The live lab gives the company the opportunity to use this additive manufacturing technology for industrial series production.

An informal launch took place recently at an innovation dinner for industrial companies and research institutes. At this meeting, 3D Makers Zone and Freemelt explained the plans. The Swedish manufacturer also explained the specific features of this additive manufacturing technology. Freemelt offers advanced technologies, including Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion (E-PBF). Herman Bolhuis, CEO of 3D Makers Zone, said the new on-site lab adds additional technology to the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area AM Park.

Reduce operating costs

The level of awareness of metal printing among Dutch companies is still low. Many parties are also opposed to the costs it entails. 3DMZ By creating a joint R&D center, they will soon be able to test innovative applications with next-generation machines, while operating costs are significantly reduced. Herman Bolhuis: “The collaboration with Freemelt and the development of our new on-site laboratory provides us with the opportunity to further improve our services, explore new areas of application and achieve our ambitious goals.”

Further integration into the industrial market

for Free Melting Daniel Gidlund, CEO of the Swedish company, said the on-site lab is an opportunity to further integrate the technology into the industrial market. “Our additive manufacturing expertise in sectors such as energy, defense and the medical industry combined with 3DMZ’s innovative approach makes this partnership and the new on-site lab an excellent opportunity to deliver high-quality, efficient 3D printing solutions to the market.”

Accelerate commercialization

The Netherlands Field Lab will play a role in accelerating the commercialization of the Freemelt additive manufacturing system. It will also play a role in supporting industrial companies that want to take the step towards additive manufacturing with electron beam metal printers. The partnership initially focuses on joint projects and research to develop new applications and optimize processes.

Open Source Technology

Freemelt’s technology uses open source technology to enable cost-effective and consistently high-quality 3D printing. Founded in 2017 and listed on the Nasdaq Northern Growth Market, Freemelt is headquartered in Mölndal, Sweden, with a production facility in Linköping and sales offices in the Netherlands and the United States. The new on-site laboratory will be operational in 2025.
