An international team led by astronomers from the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) recently discovered the existence of a strange giant filament consisting of atomic hydrogen gas in the Milky Way, the formation of a structure called “Maggi”, located regarding 55,000 light-years from Earth, that is, located on The other side of the Milky Way, they classified as the largest space object ever discovered in our galaxy.

While the length of the largest space object in the Milky Way is regarding 800 light-years, “Maggie” is regarding 3,900 light-years long and 130 light-years wide, according to the Science Alert website.

Scientists say regarding this object that what helped find it is the location in which they found it, adding: “We do not yet know how it got there exactly, but Magi extends regarding 1,600 light-years below the level of Milky WayThe observations also allowed us to determine the velocity of hydrogen gas.”

The researchers concluded from their data that Maggi has a coherent structure, as the results confirmed their previous observations led by Juan de Soler, an astrophysicist at the University of Vienna and co-author of the new study.

The secret to naming the space object “Mage”

As for the name of the strange space object, which is the largest structure in the Milky Way, it was put by “Juan de Soller”, following the longest river in his homeland, Colombia, the “Rio Magdalena” or “Magé”.

The scientists’ study of this structure, which was recently published in the Journal of Astronomy and Astrophysics, was led by Dr. Jonas Seid, Professor at MPIA, and joined by researchers from the University of Vienna, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), and the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics. Radio Astronomy (MPIFR), University of Calgary, University of Heidelberg, Center for Astrophysics and Planetary Science, Indian Institute of Science, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).
