Yvonne Dege, IOM regional spokeswoman, said the shipwreck occurred regarding 200 meters from its shores. Djibouti and that a boat carrying immigrants had sailed from Yemen around 2 am local time on April 8.
According to iefimerida, it sank two hours later with regarding 66 people on board, mostly from the Horn of Africa. These people are believed to be mostly Ethiopian nationals, she said.
“Every year tens of thousands of migrants leave the Horn of Africa, mainly from Ethiopia and Somalia trying to reach the Gulf states,” said Dege. “(But) thousands are trapped in Yemen. It is reasonable to conclude that the group of migrants who perished in this tragedy were trying to return to Djibouti to buy time and try once more later or return home.”
