371 million: Europe’s highest jackpot hit in Italy

Europe’s highest jackpot of all time was hit in Italy on Thursday. The jackpot of the “Superenalotto” game was distributed to 90 players who had spent five euros for a ticket with the six numbers put together by a betting system. The game with extremely low odds – one in 622 million – is particularly popular in the country.

The jackpot has not been hit for 15 months. Italians spend more than 1.5 billion euros a year on gambling, which was introduced 25 years ago. Since then, the jackpot has been hit 125 times.

Six numbers are typed in fields from 1 to 90. Three draws take place weekly. The winners also remain anonymous in Italy. The only thing that is officially known is in which acceptance point – bar or tobacconist – the correct six crosses were made. A large number of people usually gather there on the same evening to celebrate.
