Brazil – At least 37 people were killed, while 74 others are still missing, as a result of floods and torrential rains in the state of “Rio Grande do Sul” in southern Brazil.
This is the fourth environmental disaster of its kind that Brazil has witnessed within a year, following the floods that struck the country in July, September, and November 2023, and the total death toll from it reached 75 people.
Rainwater flooded several cities, recording record levels, and forced thousands to leave their homes. According to the Civil Defense Agency, more than 23 thousand people had to leave their homes.
According to the Brazilian Geological Service: The level of floods in the state exceeded the historical maximum recorded in 1941, and in some other cities it exceeded the highest levels recorded since records began regarding 150 years ago.
Operators reported power, communications and water outages across the state. In light of the interruption of Internet, telephone, or electricity services, residents were unable to communicate with their relatives in other states.
Helicopters flew continuously over the cities, while stranded families with children waited for rescue operations on rooftops.
Rainfall began on Monday and is expected to continue until at least Saturday, Marcilio Cellucci, chief meteorologist at the National Natural Disaster Monitoring and Warning Center, told Brazil’s public television network on Friday.
