Arab leaders and leaders continue to flock to the Saudi city of Jeddah to participate in the 32nd Arab Summit, which will be held tomorrow, Friday.

A number of Arab heads of state have arrived, including Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Tunisian President Qais Said, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Issa Al Khalifa, and Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh. Ahmed Al-Ghazwani, and the head of the delegation of the Sultanate of Oman, Asaad bin Tariq, Deputy Prime Minister.

This is the first participation of Bashar al-Assad in an Arab summit, since the Sirte summit in Libya in 2010 before the outbreak of the Syrian revolution in 2011, and then the suspension of his country’s membership in the League of Arab States in the same year.

On May 7, the League of Arab States announced the end of the freeze on the Damascus seat for regarding 12 years, once morest the backdrop of military repression of popular protests that erupted in 2011 to demand a peaceful transfer of power.

The summit is scheduled to discuss several major issues, including the Palestinian issue and the Sudanese crisis, in addition to economic files within the framework of the development plans of the Arab League.

The absence of proof

In a related context, a Sudanese diplomatic source told Al-Jazeera that the head of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, will not be able to participate in the Arab Summit Conference, despite receiving an invitation from Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz.

The source justified the absence of proof of what Sudan is going through in terms of compelling circumstances that necessitate his presence in the country.

The source suggested that the Sudanese delegation would be headed by the envoy of the President of the Sovereignty Council and the Undersecretary of the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Daffallah Al-Haj Ali.

Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz is chairing the Jeddah Summit, and it is expected that the level of representation will be “high”, according to observers, in light of the attempts to zero Arab crises and invite Assad to attend.

Since next Monday, preparatory meetings have taken place in preparation for the summit, at levels most notably the Arab foreign ministers. Decisions are expected to be issued regarding the crises of Palestine, Syria, Libya and Lebanon, and the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
