A German died in Spain while trying to save a drowning man during a storm on the Mediterranean coast near Tarragona. The 32-year-old went into the water at Fortí de la Reina on Thursday despite the choppy seas to help a 16-year-old who had fallen into the sea, said a police spokesman. Two helicopters and lifeboats were in use, but both the German and the young person drowned.
At the site of the accident the coast is rocky. Two other people died in Cantabria in the north of the country when storm “Nelson” hit Spain. A British tourist was rescued dead after being hit by a large wave and swept into the sea.

Just a few kilometers away, a local woman drowned after being swept into the sea by a wave, state TV broadcaster RTVE reported, citing the authorities. With breakers up to seven meters high, urgent warnings were issued not to approach the coast.
