On Saturday night, a 32-year-old from the Innviertel region was arrested on suspicion of re-activation. The police announced this in a broadcast on Saturday followingnoon. Last week, the suspected neo-Nazi, who had multiple criminal records, was noticed at the Braunau outdoor pool because he is said to have carelessly displayed his tattoos with forbidden Nazi symbols. Since then, the police have been investigating the known man.
According to consistent media reports, the Braunau police were alerted on July 9 by a Bavarian colleague who had observed the 32-year-old in the outdoor pool. The police confirmed that the complaint had been received by telephone, but did not provide any information on the identity of the witness. It was neither confirmed nor denied that it was a police officer. The tattooed man from the Innviertel might not be found in the outdoor pool last week, which is why the police confronted him with the witness statements at his place of residence on Friday evening.
During a physical examination, officers finally found suspicious tattoos. The public prosecutor’s office in Ried then ordered the arrest of Braunauer, who was taken to the Ried prison. According to the police, “the suspicion of a criminal offense under the Prohibition Act is being investigated”.
When asked by APA, the public prosecutor’s office in Ried confirmed on Saturday followingnoon that they had taken over the investigations in which the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Counter-Terrorism is involved. The police’s actions following the alarm is currently being “reviewed in terms of content and disciplinary law,” said the state police directorate.
As the “Kurier” reported on Saturday, the man is also said to have connections to the neo-Nazi group “Object 21”. Prosecutor Alois Ebner qualified the APA by saying that there was no clear evidence that the arrested person was connected to the former neo-Nazi organization. However, a close relationship cannot be ruled out.
The unconstitutional group was raised and broken up in Upper Austria ten years ago. A former high-ranking member of “Object 21” was once more the focus of the authorities in early July when hundreds of illegal firearms from a motorcycle club were confiscated in Upper and Lower Austria.
According to Ebner, an investigation has been underway once morest the 32-year-old for similar offenses to the incident in the outdoor pool since the spring. At that time, the Innviertler had posed shirtless on his Facebook account and thus revealed his illegal tattoos. At least one of them was once more noticed as a punishable offense in yesterday’s investigation – it was a skull and crossbones with SS runes, as the chief public prosecutor went on to explain.
Since the suspect has already been convicted three times under the Prohibition Act, he now faces a prison sentence of up to ten years. Whether the provisional custody will be extended will be decided on Sunday when the Innviertler is presented to the criminal judge.
