The 31st Federal Yodeling Festival opened on Friday in Zug with the reception of the flags, in the presence of 10,000 singers. In all, some 150,000 people are expected for this demonstration, which lasts until Sunday.

More than 10,000 yodellers, flag throwers and alphorn players will perform in Zug over three days. Foreign yodeling clubs are also present. The first competitions started on Friday followingnoon. The yodeling village is near the lake. The highlight of the festival is the official ceremony on Sunday morning as well as the grand parade of participants.

Originally, the yodel was the call of the armaillis, the shepherds of the Friborg and Vaud Pre-Alps, to gather the herds. Some even saw it as a way of addressing God directly. But today, it’s mostly regarding music and people. “If we start to sing, and we see that someone is starting to cry, we have done our job”, explains Albert Graf, famous Swiss yodeling singer.

The Patrouille Suisse show originally scheduled for the opening of the festival was canceled Thursday following an accident during training. Two Tiger F-5 aircraft brushed once morest each other and the nose of one of the jets broke off. The pilots were not injured. A person on the ground was injured by shards of glass.

The Federal Yodel Festival takes place every three years. The edition scheduled for 2020 has been canceled due to the pandemic. In 2017, the yodellers and yodellers met in Brig (VS). The budget for the Zug edition is 5.8 million francs.
