The white cloth hung next to the tiled stove on the first floor of the nursing home. Someone had embroidered three sentences on it, the writing squiggly and decorated with ornaments. I read these three sentences once more and once more when my parents, my sister and I visited my great-aunt. I repeated line following line once morest the boredom and reluctance to be there. “Honour the ancients. They were as you are. You will be as they are.” I was ten years old then. The embroidered slogan, like the rest of the nursing home, was a remote threat.
