The 30th Jungfrau Marathon was a successful anniversary!
A beaming OC President, Toni Alpinice, is visibly satisfied in the evening following the anniversary marathon: “We are happy to know that all the runners are healthy and that we have had an unforgettable marathon!”
After the Jungfrau Minirun, Minimarathon and the Harder Run Race took place in Interlaken on Friday, the Jungfrau Marathon started for the 30th time on the morning of September 9th. 3,467 runners tackled the Eiger Glacier finish at 8:30 a.m. in summer temperatures. The competition was closely covered by the media with a live stream on various channels. The anniversary half marathon started at 10:10 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. at the Brüggmatte between Lauterbrunnen and Stechelberg, a competition that was held for the first time due to the 30th anniversary. 580 participants started over half the distance. Shortly following the start, her route joined the field of marathon runners.
The fastest:
The men’s day’s victory went to Vitaliy Shafar from Ukraine, who clearly missed the course record, but crossed the finish line with a comfortable lead over second-placed Elhousine Elazzaoui from Morocco. Jose David Cardona Rios from Colombia came third. Stephan Wenk was the best Swiss in eighth place. The best Bernese Oberlander is Jerome Furer from LV Thun in 12th place. Markus Peter from Steffisburg is in 20th place.
In the women’s race, a Swiss woman, Theres Leboeuf, secured the day’s victory. Second place was Karen Van Proeyen from Belgium, already around 10 minutes behind. Rounding out the podium was Petra Eggenschwiler. The best Bernese Oberlander is Manuela Lüthi Zurschmiede from Wilderswil in 12th place. Karin Jaun from Unterseen runs in her 23rd Jungfrau Marathon in 14th place.
A tough anniversary
The topic of the warm temperatures that prevailed on the day of the marathon was included in the planning in advance. The call for sufficient sun protection and sufficient water and electrolyte supply was strengthened via social media. The heat during the competition pushed some of them to their limits earlier and brought with it additional strain. Erich Reuteler from Unterseen, who had already completed the Jungfrau Marathon over 25 times, even said: “That was the hardest!” Several athletes had to be taken out of the competition due to the time limit set for safety reasons. 3,137 runners in the marathon and 571 in the half marathon distance were classified at the finish. This means that 339 athletes had to give up the competition over both distances. Despite everything, Thomas von Wyl, race doctor, said there was no increased need for medical care on the route and that everything went off without any notable incidents: “The participants prepared well and we therefore even had very few operations.”
The award ceremony then took place in Grindelwald, where the anniversary participants who had attended 30, 25, 20 or 10 times were honored once more.
