It was also prepared in Tokyo, but use in the athletes’ village was banned due to COVID-19.

Up to 300,000 condoms will be provided to help athletes stay safe at the Paris Olympics, which is regarding four months away. The main material for the beds provided in individual rooms will once once more be ‘corrugated cardboard.’ The Paris Olympics will open on July 26 and run until August 11.

According to the U.S. CBS broadcast on the 18th (local time), Laurent Michaud, director of the Paris Olympic Village, said in a recent interview with Sky News in the UK that 300,000 condoms are currently ready.

Director Michaud said, “It’s important for (the players) to be cheerful here,” and added, “Working with the players’ committee, our goal is to create a place where players can feel both passion and comfort.”

At the time of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics held in 2021, the organizing committee prepared regarding 160,000 condoms, but prohibited their use in the athletes’ village. This was a measure to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19).

The 1988 Seoul Olympics was the first time that event organizers handed out free condoms in the athletes’ village. During the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, 450,000 were distributed, the largest number ever. As the COVID-19 epidemic subsided following the Tokyo Olympics, the ‘traditional policy’ was revived starting with the Paris Olympics.

The ‘no physical contact’ guideline applied during the previous competition also disappeared. At the time, the organizing committee asked players through official notices to avoid contact such as hugs, high fives, and handshakes.

According to Sky News, which toured the athletes’ village, the main material for the beds provided in individual rooms is once more ‘corrugated cardboard.’

The cardboard bed, which first appeared during the Tokyo Olympics, was a custom-made product by the Games organizing committee, which pursued an eco-friendly competition. The bed frame was designed with cardboard material and a mattress was laid on top of it. The Tokyo Olympics organizing committee advertised that this bed can withstand a load of 200 kg.

At the time, players from each country expressed their doubts by posting various videos on social networking services (SNS) regarding whether corrugated cardboard, which was made of paper rather than wood, might withstand the weight.

Sky News reported that the cardboard beds used at the Paris Olympics can withstand a load of 250 kg.
