AA/Geneva

The United Nations has announced the death of more than 3,000 migrants, during the year 2021, on the Mediterranean routes and in the Atlantic Ocean, while trying to reach Europe.

This was stated by the spokeswoman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Shabia Mantoo, during a press conference.

She explained that 1,924 people perished in the Mediterranean, while 1,153 others were reported dead trying to reach the Canary Islands.

“In 2020, 1,544 deaths were reported for the two routes and since the beginning of the year, an additional 478 people have died or gone missing at sea,” she said.

At the same time, she called on the international community to provide 163.5 million dollars to the UNHCR fund, with the aim of protecting illegal migrants.
