300 MWh energy storage should make Burgenland energy independent – federal states

Actually, Burgenland is already doing well in terms of its energy (in)dependence. As early as 2021, when the plan was communicated for Burgenland to be climate- and energy-neutral by 2030, 50 percent of the ten terawatt hours (TWh) of energy required in the country – this includes electricity as well as oil and gas – came from the own production. In the meantime, a few more photovoltaic modules have been found on roofs, large-scale photovoltaic systems have been put into operation and 20-year-old wind systems have been modernized and new ones set up. As a result, Burgenland is now only 40 percent dependent on energy imports, explains Burgenland Energy board chairman Stephan Sharma. But a lot is still missing before energy independence – especially because experts assume that the country’s total energy needs will rise to eleven terawatt hours by 2030.
