CIt lasted a year, from October 1993 to October 1994. The homeless who came to the emergency rooms of Marseille hospitals were taken care of by medical teams. Among them, 43 were hospitalized and underwent a whole series of examinations and blood tests. During the same period, blood was also taken in parallel from 57 hospitalized patients who were not homeless. Finally, one of the team’s doctors also went to meet the homeless in the city’s accommodation centres, once more to collect blood. 211 people were stung. The purpose of this vast operation? Detect traces of bacterial infections in the homeless – Bartonella quintana – transmitted by lice and responsible for trench fever. This research was led by…
