Right in the middle of the electrifying Try HonestyThursday evening, the singer of Billy Talent spoke to the public on the Plains of Abraham to tell them that the group had been playing together for 30 years now.

“It makes us cursed old people, but we still have the same love and the same inspiration as when we created this group at 17 years old, shouted Ben Kowalewicz, before mentioning that he was realizing a dream by playing on the same card as Weezer.
True, Billy Talent has not aged a bit on stage. Despite the sweltering heat, the Toronto quartet delivered their twenty titles on the program with tremendous energy, as they have done on each of their many visits to Quebec.
In such conditions, it commands admiration.
From the first notes of Devil In a Midnight Mass, Kowalewicz grabbed the mic with both hands and sang like his life depended on it. At his side, Ian D’Sa and Jon Gallant had a great time on guitar and bass.

The pedal to the floor, the quartet continued with an equally dashing This Suffering then Ben Kowalewicz launched I Beg To Differ while playing air guitar.
Stick together
Even if the atmosphere was one of collective release, Kowalewicz wanted to remind people of the importance of taking care of others on a few occasions, both on the Heatwave Plains and in life in general.
“If you’re having a hard time or need help, don’t hesitate to contact someone,” he offered as an introduction to a period song dealing with this subject. Nothing To Lose.
Proving that they lead by example when it comes to empathy, the guys have respected the tradition of inviting their original drummer and brother-in-arms Aaron Soloweniuk, who can no longer play because he has multiple sclerosis, to sit on the drums for a survivor of album number 2, Pins and Needles.
Gathering classics
Billy Talent’s great strength has always been his ability to produce devilishly catchy rock melodies with an undeniable unifying effect. Of course, the classics were all there for this group’s return to the Plains, six years following their last concert on this same site, on Canada Day.
With the musicians hair increasingly oozing as the show progressed, Billy Talent mostly hit the bullseye with Try Honesty, Fallen Leaves et Red Flagperfect songs to increase the level of participation of festival-goers, who were only asking to party and shout the lyrics.
At Billy Talent, we can once once more say mission accomplished.
