30 years ago the Yacyretá Hydroelectric Power Plant was inaugurated

Asuncion, IP Agency.- On September 2, 1994, the Yacyretá Hydroelectric Power Plant was inaugurated with the start-up of the first turbine (UG No. 1), thus beginning commercial energy generation at a reduced altitude of 76 meters above sea level.

Previously, in February, the crests of both spillways were raised, and on June 1 the earth dams were completed at an altitude of 86 meters above sea level, beginning the progressive filling of the reservoir until reaching an altitude of 76 meters above sea level.

In three decades, this turbine operated a total of 207,122 hours, with a total energy generated of 22,345,554.6 MWh, Yacyretá reported.

It should be noted that UNG No. 1, as well as the others, are of the vertical axis Kaplan type directly coupled to the generator.

Kaplan turbines are one of the most efficient axial-flow jet water turbines with an impeller that operates in a manner similar to a ship’s propeller1 and are named after their inventor, the Austrian Viktor Kaplan2. They are used for low-head, high-flow applications. The turbine’s wide blades are driven by high-pressure water released through a gate.

Its maximum flow rate is 830 m3 per second, with a nominal net head of 21.3 m, a maximum power of 160’MW, a runner weight of 278 tons and a rotation speed of 71.4 revolutions per minute. The rotor has a diameter of 15 meters, a height of 1.50 meters and a weight of 550 tons; while the stator has a diameter of 17.7 meters, a height of 2.5 meters and a weight of 270 tons.

It should be remembered that the works of the Yacyretá Hydroelectric Power Plant had begun on December 3, 1983. On October 20, Contract Y-C1 was signed regarding the construction of the main works of the Hydroelectric Complex, with the Eriday-UTE consortium.

Finally, on July 7, 1998, turbine number 20 was started up and in September the construction work on the main works was declared finished. In turn, on February 12, 2011, EBY completed the filling of the Yacyretá reservoir to its original design elevation of 83 meters above sea level.

For three decades, Yacyretá has been generating electricity for the economic development of its condominium partners, Paraguay and Argentina. This energy has also been at the service of the well-being of both communities, through social investments (hospitals, schools, housing, assistance to agricultural production, road paving, installation of drinking water systems, construction of waterfronts and the distribution of food, among other areas).
