30 affected by poisoning at Children’s Day event in Bolívar

  • Most of the patients are teenagers who belonged to the group of recreational activity

Residents of Caicara del Orinoco, in the Cedeño municipality of Bolívar state, reported that at least 30 people presented symptoms of intoxication and dehydration after attending an activity on the occasion of Children’s Day on Sunday, July 21.

According to journalist Francesca Díaz, those affected were part of a group of reenactors of the activity, including teenagers.

The patients were transferred to the Dr. Arnoldo Gabaldón Hospital for medical attention, a situation that caused the collapse of the health center.

What is poisoning and what are the symptoms?

It is a physiological reaction caused by contact with a xenobiotic compound called a toxin, through exposure, ingestion, injection or inhalation of a toxic substance as long as it is of chemical composition, since if the compound is natural it will be called excessive ingestion.

Some toxins include industrial, household and gardening products, drugs, carbon monoxide and excessive alcohol use.

These are some common symptoms:

-Stomach ache
-Vomiting
-Diarrhea
-Diarrhea and bloody stools
-Stomach pain and abdominal cramps
-Fever
-Headache.

The event was held in the bandshell of the coleo sleeve and was organized by the Mayor’s Office of the Cedeño municipality to share with the children of the Caicara del Orinoco community.

According to witnesses, the victims consumed food and drinks during the activity. Later, episodes of intoxication occurred, such as vomiting, asphyxiation and convulsions, according to reports on the social network X.

Díaz shared several videos on his X account, in which some of the affected people can be seen being transported on motorcycles to the health center.

In other videos shared by users on the social network, people at the celebration can be seen helping some of the victims on the ground.

People reported that the Dr. Arnoldo Gabaldón Hospital did not have the necessary supplies to care for patients.

The Mayor of the Cedeño Municipality has not issued any statement regarding what happened.

Other facts of mass poisoning

On July 10, the sole health authority of Lara state, Javier Cabrera, reported that 56 people They were poisoned after consuming food during a school celebration in the Palavecino municipality of the entity.

The events took place in the evening hours of July 9 in the El Tamarindo hamlet in the José Gregorio Bastidas parish.

“24 adults were referred to the Antonio María Pineda Central University Hospital, 7 adults to the Dr. Pastor Oropeza Riera Hospital, 6 patients to the Bararida CDI, 10 children to the Dr. Agustín Zubillaga Pediatric University Hospital, 3 infants to the Pastor Oropeza Hospital and six adults remain in the Cabudare Outpatient Clinic,” said the sole health authority.

According to information in X’s account at the Lara Health Department, patients received medical attention such as hydration, gastric protectors, steroids and observation.

In April 2024, at least 22 students from the Rómulo Gallegos National Experimental University (Unerg) in San Juan de los Morros, Guárico state, were poisoned while they were in a classroom.

Those affected were medical students, according to the president of the Federation of University Centers of Unerg, Luis Nadales.

The young people presented symptoms such as headache, nausea, vomiting, hypotension and difficulty breathing.

Authorities have ruled out the poisoning as being caused by scopolamine, known as burundanga.
