Over the past few weeks, Moscow has stepped up airstrikes once morest Ukraine, targeting key infrastructure, including power plants, in retaliation for deadly attacks on Russian border regions.
The governor of Ukraine’s southern Kherson region, which is partially occupied by Russia, said a woman was killed in a drone strike in the village of Mykhailivka.
Ukrainian forces liberated part of the Black Sea region in late 2022, but Russian forces have since shelled the retaken towns and villages.
“A 61-year-old local woman was fatally wounded in her own home,” Governor Oleksandr Prokudin wrote on social media.
The governor of the neighboring Mykolaiv region later reported that a Russian ballistic missile had hit the coastal area, injuring six people, one of whom was in critical condition.
A 55-year-old man was killed by artillery fire in the southeastern Ukrainian city of Nikopol, Serhiy Lysak, head of the Dnipropetrovsk region, reported.
At the time, Oleh Synjehubov, governor of the eastern Kharkiv region, said on social media that separate artillery and rocket strikes on towns and villages in the region killed one person and wounded 16 others.
The Kharkiv region borders Russia and has been under constant shelling since the February 2022 invasion, with the latest bombings leaving thousands without electricity.
The mayor of the regional capital said people were “killed and injured” in the strike in a residential area, but did not provide details on the casualties.
“Little time”
Ukraine’s air force said separately that the Russians had launched 13 Iranian-made attack drones into Ukraine overnight and that 10 of them had been shot down over the Kharkiv region, neighboring Sumy region and near the capital Kyiv.
During an online press conference on Wednesday, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called for the urgent delivery of air defense systems to prevent increased ballistic missile strikes.
“A characteristic of the current Russian attacks is the intensive use of ballistic missiles, which can reach targets at extremely high speeds, leaving little time for people to hide and causing great losses,” Kuleba said.
Patriot and other similar systems are defensive by definition. They are intended to protect lives, not to take them away,” he said.
Ukraine has been facing a munitions shortage for the past few months, and a crucial $60 billion deal remains stuck in Washington. dollars (55 billion euros) aid package.
It has also been forced to concede to Russia on the eastern front in recent months and earlier this week warned of heavy fighting around the eastern city of Chasiv Yar.
At the time, Russia announced that its air defense systems had shot down 18 missiles near the border city of Belgorod, which has seen a recent increase in Ukrainian attacks.
The governor of Belgorod said that one person was injured in the shooting.
