Three health workers who are being prosecuted for participating in the trade union coordination march yesterday, Wednesday, are expected to appear before the Public Prosecution tomorrow, Friday, July 12.

According to sources from the National Union Coordination in the Health Sector, three health workers, out of 28 who were arrested, will be brought before the King’s Attorney at the Rabat Court of First Instance tomorrow, Friday.

No official information has been issued so far regarding the number of detainees and injured persons or the nature of the injuries in the aforementioned march.

In contrast, the health sector’s trade union coordination decided to paralyze public hospitals for two consecutive weeks, in protest once morest what it called “encroachment, the violation of freedom of demonstration, and the severe repression once morest health professionals.”

The National Trade Union Coordination in the Health Sector announced, in a statement, the extension of the strike days to become 5 days a week (from Monday to Friday, July 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19, 2024), in addition to another strike for 5 days (from Monday to Friday, July 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26, 2024) in all hospital, preventive, administrative and training institutions nationwide, with the exception of emergency and resuscitation departments.”

In parallel, the union coordination decided to continue the strike today, Thursday, July 11, and to go on another strike on Friday, July 12, 2024.

The coordination held the head of government, Aziz Akhannouch, responsible for the consequences of the strike, due to his disregard for the health of citizens, noting that
“Instead of implementing the agreement signed with the unions representing health workers to do them justice, which required dozens of meetings and negotiations with an inter-ministerial committee (…) the freedom to demonstrate is being violated and health professionals are being severely repressed.”

It is noteworthy that the public forces intervened, yesterday morning, Wednesday, by force to prevent a national protest march by health professionals in the capital, Rabat, using water hoses to disperse the protesters who announced this form of protest to express their anger due to the neglect of the demands included in the agreement between their unions and the relevant ministerial sectors, following a series of meetings within the framework of the sectoral dialogue.
