Vienna (OTS) Wiener Linien and the City of Vienna – Road Administration and Road Construction will start on Monday, June 19, 2023 with preparatory work for the redesign measures in Praterstrasse and Aspernbrückengasse in the 2nd district. Before the start of the redesign measures, Wiener Linien is carrying out extensive sealing work in the area of the reception building of the U1 station “Nestroyplatz”.

Details

On the side leading out of town over a length of over 900 meters – from Aspernbrücke, via Aspernbrückengasse and Praterstraße – a two-way cycle path is being built that is up to 4.5 meters wide and structurally separate. The existing approx. 1.50 m wide one-way cycle path leading into the city center in Praterstraße and Aspernbrückengasse will be retained and widened. On the road out of town from the Danube Canal to the Praterstern, there is no lane for motorized traffic.

A total of 51 new trees and 18 standard shrubs will be planted. The large-crowned plane trees along Praterstrasse will remain in place to provide shade, and the existing tree grates will be renovated. In Aspernbrückengasse, an additional green strip with trees will be built along the new two-way cycle path. On the opposite side, along the one-way cycle path, there is also a green strip with standard shrubs.

As part of the redesign of Praterstrasse, the areas around Therese-Krones-Park, Nestroyplatz and Rosl-Berndt-Platz will also be upgraded. Two water features and six new trees will provide cooling at Nestroyplatz and the adjacent Therese-Krones-Park. The Rosl-Berndt-Platz will have a water feature and additional green areas. A total of six drinking fountains will be erected along the route. 20 new benches and 60 individual seats will soon invite you to linger and relax. 80 additional bicycle parking spaces complete the offer for cyclists. The sidewalks along Praterstrasse are paved with light-colored concrete blocks. The roadway will be renovated in large parts of Aspernbrückengasse and Praterstraße during the redesign work.

traffic measures

There is already a diversion for cyclists from Aspernbrücke via Untere Donaustrasse and Franzensbrückenstrasse to Praterstern and this will remain in place. This detour can be used in both directions.

For the cycle path leading into the city (Praterstern via Praterstraße and Aspernbrückengasse to Aspernbrücke), a diversion from Praterstern via Heinestraße, Zirkusgasse, Komödiengasse and Große Mohrengasse will be set up from June 26th.

From June 19, there will be traffic restrictions for motorized traffic in sections. One lane in each direction will remain free.

From the night of July 3rd, extensive work will begin on Praterstrasse. From Nestroyplatz, Praterstrasse will be closed in the direction of Praterstern. Limited access to Nestroyplatz via Aspernbrückengasse and Praterstraße is only possible from Untere Donaustraße.

One lane will remain in the direction of travel into town. In the section between Rotensterngasse and Nestroyplatz, there is a diversion via Rotensterngasse, Weintraubengasse and Schrottgiessergasse. The one-way route in Weintraubengasse, Schrottgiessergasse and Tempelgasse (between Ferdinandstraße and Czerningasse) will be temporarily reversed.

Pedestrian traffic will remain intact during all construction phases with selective constrictions and relocations. From July 3rd, some night work is possible.

Bus line 5A, which runs in the direction of the city on Praterstraße between Rotensterngasse and Nestroyplatz, will be routed briefly from Rotensterngasse via Kleine Mohrengasse and Schmelzgasse from 3 July for the duration of construction. The stops “Nestroyplatz/Praterstraße” and “Nestroyplatz” will be temporarily closed. A replacement stop will be set up at Kleine Mohrengasse 1-3. The night bus line N25 will be diverted via Dampfschiffstrasse and Franzensbrückenstrasse from July 3rd.

Parking spaces, taxi locations, loading zones and bicycle parking facilities in the construction area will be relocated, reduced or provisionally removed depending on the construction progress. The access roads to the approved garage parking spaces will remain largely intact. From July 3, the underground car park at Praterstraße 31 (Galaxy Tower) can only be reached at night via Dampfschiffstraße, Franzensbrückenstraße, Praterstern, Praterstraße, Rotensterngasse and Weintraubengasse during the construction period.
