29 killed, 85 injured in collision between passenger and freight train in Greece

About 29 people were killed and 85 injured as a result of a collision between 2 trains near the city of Larissa in the European country of Greece.

According to international media reports, a spokesman for the fire services confirmed that the accident occurred between the capital Athens and Thessaloniki when a passenger train carrying 350 passengers collided with a freight train about 235 miles north of Athens.

He told a press conference that ‘so far at least 29 people have been found dead, most of the passengers have been taken to a safe place, efforts are still on to rescue more people trapped’.

According to the emergency service, about 150 firefighters and 40 ambulances have been mobilized, cranes and technical personnel have also been deployed to remove the debris.

One bogie of the train has been completely crushed, making rescue work very difficult, while smoke and flames are pouring out from other parts.

85 people have been injured in the accident and have been transferred to nearby hospitals, with local media describing the accident as Greece’s worst train accident ever.

An emergency government meeting has been convened following the accident, with Greek Health Minister Thanos Plioris visiting the scene while Interior Minister Takis Theodoricakos is overseeing the operations of the Crisis Management Centre.

According to the fire services, 2 hospitals near Larissa have been allocated to treat several injured, while military hospitals in Thessaloniki and Athens are also on ‘alert’ in case of need.
