According to the motorway operator “Autostrade per l’Italia”, the accident happened between Gemona and Carnia in the direction of the Austrian border. Some of the victims were taken to hospitals in Udine and Tolmezzo.
Traffic jam on return journey
Part of the motorway was temporarily closed to traffic, which caused considerable problems. An eight-kilometer-long traffic jam formed after the collision. Traffic was then diverted to a single lane. Due to the return of many Austrian and German holidaymakers, traffic on the Italian motorways is particularly heavy.
