These migrants were repatriated to Libya, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). “From May 1 to 7, 254 migrants were intercepted at sea and repatriated to Libya,” the IOM said in a statement. Since the beginning of this year, 4,715 illegal migrants have been rescued and returned to Libya, including 438 women and 188 minors. IOM also reported that 114 illegal migrants died and 436 others were missing on the Central Mediterranean route in 2022. Libya has been going through a security crisis since the fall of late leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, making the country North Africa a privileged starting point for illegal migrants who want to cross the Mediterranean towards the European coasts.
