24-year-old female employee sentenced to 3 months in prison for Tongleju child abuse case involved in picking up toddler and throwing it

Tongleju Child Abuse Case

34 employees have been charged in the 2021 child abuse incident at “Tongleju” under the Hong Kong Society for the Protection of Children. One of the 24-year-old child care workers was suspected of picking up the child and throwing it to the ground and the wall. He denied one count of intentional assault or neglect earlier. He was convicted at the Kowloon City Magistrates’ Court yesterday (16th) and sentenced to prison 3 months.

The defendant, Chen Oiying, was charged with intentionally attacking or neglecting a child under the age of 16 on December 2, 2021 at the Hong Kong Society for the Protection of Children on Portland Street, Mong Kok, as a person in charge of custody.

When she appeared in court earlier, she argued that the victim had been crying and screaming at the time of the incident, and had repeatedly approached young children suffering from infectious diseases. She had to pick up the victim and put him back on the ground mat. , although the action at the time had a sense of punishment, it did not intend to hurt or attack the victim.

The magistrate said that according to the CCTV footage, the victim began to cry following being patted on the head by the defendant. The defendant threw the victim to the ground three times, describing the defendant’s statement as a fabricated excuse to get rid of the crime. The victim was only 2 years old at the time of the incident, and he was wearing antipyretic stickers. The defendant should have known that the victim was unwell. The court must convey the message that child abuse or neglect has serious consequences, and that prison is the only option for defendants who have abused society’s trust in their actions without seeing remorse.
