The opposition union in KSRTC has declared a 24-hour strike in the state from midnight today. The strike was called following a meeting chaired by the transport minister failed to discuss the pay crisis. Opposition groups called for a halt to the protests, saying “government intervention is ineffective.”
The Minister has repeatedly assured that the salary will not be deducted. But so far neither the Transport Minister nor the KSRTC management has been able to keep that promise. Last month was the month that hurt them the most. As everyone in this country celebrated Easter and Vishu, KSRTC employees went hungry. The belief was that the government might have avoided their famine if they had thought. That did not happen, the leaders said, adding that despite the 18-day delay, the meeting was held hours before the strike was due to take place, giving the people the opportunity to take the necessary precautions by giving them a strike notice as required by law.
Today, the CMD of KSRTC first said that he would pay the salary on the 21st. Last month’s salary is said to be on the 21st of this month. When they said they were adamant on the strike, they said they would pay 10 for the salary. Opposition parties have stated they will not run in the by-elections, but will use force to protest.
