The 19-year-old woman had locked herself in a cage on the Grand-Place in Tournai on Saturday evening. For 24 hours, she remained seated on the ground, blindfolded, like what her uncle saw in his cell.

Olivier Vandecasteele’s niece will lock herself in a cell for 24 hours on the Grand Place in Tournai

“During these 24 hours, I was very moved by the support of the population. Today, we have to go quickly, very quickly to save Olivier”, declared Manon as he left the cage, to the applause of a hundred people.

“The night was calm and Manon was able to sleep for a few hours. She wanted to do 24 hours in order to show that what Olivier saw there was nothing comparable to his imprisonment here in Tournai”, explained his mother, Nathalie Vandecasteele. “She is the one who chose to do this action. We would have preferred not to organize it, but it is progressing too slowly. Olivier can go out for half an hour a day, that’s the ordeal he lives at the daily for 425 days. He was transferred from prison, but his condition is deteriorating, without a blanket and without a mattress.”

During the 24 hours of the action, the citizens were invited to write on the spot or to deposit in a ballot box a letter addressed to the Belgian political leaders in charge of the file. All letters will be deposited Friday, April 28 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. For those who could not go to Tournai during these 24 hours of imprisonment, letters can still be sent to the address letteraugouvernementbelge@gmail.com until Wednesday 26 April.
