The Road Safety Observatory (OSV) recorded in its most recent report that 223 traffic accidents were recorded in Venezuela in June, in which 75 people died and 226 were injured.

According to the non-governmental organization (NGO), the study was carried out based on monitoring in digital media (local and regional). It detailed that, of the total number of road accidents reported, in 82% of the cases men died, while in 17.3% the fatal victims were women.

The fatal victims include motorcyclists (36); drivers of private vehicles (11); companions or occupants in vehicles (10); passengers (8); pedestrians run over (4) and cyclists (3),” the observatory indicated in a press release.

The OSV revealed that Miranda is the state with the highest number of traffic accidents in June, with 26.4% of the total registered. It is followed by the Capital District (19.7%), Bolívar (13.9%), Carabobo (7.6%) and Falcón (7.17%).

The report also stated that 36.7% of the cases occurred on avenues, 31.3% on highways, 10.7% on streets, 22% on secondary roads and 4.4% on trunk roads.

“This month, and thanks to contributions from the Zoom Foundation, the OSV added statistics that included other data of interest to more accurately analyze the accidents that occur in the country,” the organization said.

As for the types of road accidents included in the report, single crashes accounted for 30.4%; multiple crashes and skidding (fallen motor vehicles) 14.3%; run-overs 13.0% and crashes with a fixed object 10.7%. There was only one case of a person falling from a moving vehicle, while in nine of the recorded events the cause was not indicated.

Of the 223 reported accidents, the NGO determined that 51.1% of the events occurred from Monday to Thursday, while 48.9% occurred on weekends (Friday to Sunday).

The percentage of road accidents that occurred in June represents a reduction of 21.48% compared to the month of May, when 284 cases were recordedIn the previous study, the OSV indicated that 101 people died as a result of traffic accidents: 77 men, 18 women and six minors.

The NGO reported 80 collisions, 33 vehicle overturns, 33 run-overs, 50 motorcycle skids, 35 collisions with fixed objects and 28 collisions between vehicles.

The Road Safety Observatory said that one of the categories included in its report refers to stunt riding and stated that at least five cases of traffic accidents reported in June are related to this practice.
