The government gave its weekly update on monkeypox. 1,669 more cases, including 5 in Luxembourg, were detected in Europe last week.
As of 23 August, in 43 countries and areas in the European region, a total of 21,098 cases of monkeypox have been reported to health authorities at the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO). An increase of 1,669 cases since last week.
The majority of them were between 31 and 40 years old (8,231 out of 20,644, or 40%) and were men (98.8%). Of those whose HIV status was known, 37% (3,070) were HIV-positive. The majority (95%) had a rash and systemic symptoms such as fever, fatigue, muscle aches, vomiting, diarrhea, chills, sore throat or headache.

576 cases were hospitalized (5.9%) and 194 required clinical care. Four cases were admitted to the intensive care unit and two died of monkeypox. To date, 64 cases have been reported to be healthcare workers, three of whom had occupational exposure. They were wearing recommended personal protective equipment but were exposed to body fluids during sample collection.
Over the same period, 50 contaminations were detected in Luxembourg, which represents an increase of 5 cases since last week. So far all these people are male and the average age is 37 years. Two cases were hospitalized for a short time and have meanwhile been discharged from hospital.
