2025 Club World Cup Qualifiers: Last Chance for European Teams

2024-03-12 17:04:35

There are only three tickets left to be granted to the Europe zone for the next Club World Cup, which will take place in 2025 under its brand new 32-team formula. Depending on the scenarios, the identity of the last three qualifiers may be known this week.

Places are now very expensive. While the Club World Cup will undergo its revolution in 2025, with a brand new formula of 32 teams, nine of the 12 tickets granted to the Europe zone (UEFA) have already found takers. And the identity of the last three qualifiers could be known at the end of this European week.

Juve and Atlético will follow Barça-Naples

The last four round of 16 second legs of the Champions League, Arsenal-Porto and Barça-Naples this Tuesday evening then Atlético-Inter and Dortmund-PSG on Wednesday, will be decisive. Juventus, Atlético de Madrid and RB Salzburg can indeed validate their qualification this week depending on the scenarios.

As a reminder, the winners of the four Champions Leagues preceding the competition (Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester City pending the 2024 winner) are guaranteed to be qualified. The other tickets are determined by a ranking of clubs based on their performances in the Champions League over the same four-year period (2021-2024 for the 2025 Club World Cup), with a ceiling of two clubs per country.

In the event of Naples being eliminated against Barça this Tuesday evening (9 p.m. on RMC Sport, 1-1 in the first leg), Juventus Turin is guaranteed to represent Italy, the first transalpine ticket already being in the pocket of Inter Milan. By the same logic, an elimination of Barça would automatically qualify Atlético. To hope to be in the game in the summer of 2025, the Catalan club must either win the Champions League or continue its journey by catching up with Atlético de Madrid in the C1 performance rankings.

Behind PSG, it’s over for French clubs

Last club that can qualify this week: RB Salzburg. The Austrian club, 18th in the club rankings over the 2021-2024 period, must count on the eliminations of Arsenal against FC Porto (1-0 for Porto in the first leg) and PSV Eindhoven against Borussia Dortmund (1- 1 on the way out). In this case, all teams ahead of Salzburg in the club rankings will either already qualify or be unable to qualify due to the quota of two clubs per country.
