The first primaries for the next US presidency will take place in Iowa on Monday. A three-way battle is emerging among the Republicans. According to polls, former President Trump is clearly ahead of Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley.
News from Iowa rarely makes it to the rest of the world. There has to be a massacre or a whirlwind for that to happen. Otherwise, the US state between Mississippi and Missouri appears tranquil: the prairie is wide there, with rolling hills and lots of corn. But once every four years “breaking news” reliably comes from Iowa. Then the first presidential primaries will take place there.
Iowa is home to 3.2 million residents, slightly less than one percent of the U.S. population. That seems almost negligible. But candidates who score there have at least a small starting advantage. This time all attention is on the Republicans, the Democratic challengers to President Joe Biden. Will former President Donald Trump even manage a start-to-finish victory?
