The US presidential race will take a new step on Monday with the start of the caucuses and primaries. Democrat Suzi LeVine estimated in Everyone that Joe Biden is starting with a head start and that he has a good chance of being re-elected if his camp manages to mobilize widely.
Things are getting serious for the American presidential election. On Monday, January 15, the Republican caucus in Iowa will kick off this election year. Barring any major surprises, an encore repeat of the Trump-Biden confrontation is already looming on November 5.
Donald Trump “is ready to sacrifice our democracy”, launched the outgoing president on Friday during a speech. He also accused his main rival of using rhetoric comparable to that of “Nazi Germany”. The tone is set.
“Many voters remained on the sidelines, unaware of the urgency of the situation,” comments former American ambassador to Switzerland Suzi LeVine, interviewed Thursday on the show Tout un monde. It is therefore urgent to remind voters that it is a choice between an autocracy and a democracy,” says the Democrat, who is very involved in the campaign.
A balance sheet as an argument
But presenting Joe Biden as the last bastion of the rule of law may not be enough. Suzi LeVine, however, appears confident: the outgoing president can count on his record in office to convince. “He can talk regarding the jobs and industries he creates,” she explains.
According to her, the outgoing party already has a head start. “Joe Biden can already focus on the general electorate (…) the independents, the center, the center-right or the center-left”, while the Republican candidates “are obliged to court the extreme right” , analyzes the former United States ambassador to Switzerland under the presidency of Barack Obama.
Mobilize African-American and Hispanic electorates
But Suzi LeVine is well aware that the 81-year-old candidate must remobilize the African-American and Hispanic electorate, where conservative ideas are gaining ground, particularly among young people. The African-American electorate in particular played a decisive role in Joe Biden’s victory four years ago, voting 92% for him.
In 2024, and according to recent opinion surveys, Donald Trump might hope for up to 20% of the votes of black voters, or even more.
During the campaign, Democrats must therefore “better explain how their policies very directly benefit these communities,” believes this expert in American politics.
“Even if it will be close”, Suzi LeVine nevertheless says she is convinced that Joe Biden will win. “If we all participate (…) by making phone calls, knocking on doors, we will win,” she assures.
