Next January 1 will mark a new stage in the gradual increase in tobacco prices desired by the government. An increase system in accordance with the law passed by Parliament in 2022, which plans to pass on inflation to the price of tobacco.
Tobacconists expected increases of 40 to 50 cents on the price of cigarettes on January 1, 2024, but certain manufacturers did not just limit themselves to integrating this tax increase into their pricing and took the opportunity to review their margins.
Philip Morris, which notably manufactures Marlboros, will apply increases of at least 1 euro on most of its products, according to a document published Tuesday by Customs. Marlboro Red pack of 20 unitsthe most smoked in France according to tobacconists, will increase from 11.50 to 12.50 euros on January 1st.

A price tripled in 20 years
The price of a pack of cigarettes has tripled over the past 20 years, from four to twelve euros. A strategy which bore fruit from 2016 to 2019, with a drop in daily smoking of 24 to 29% on average, but which seems to have stagnated since 2019.
As part of its anti-smoking plan, the government has also banned smoking in new outdoor places such as beaches, parks and gardens, and around public places, notably schools.
To date, there are still 12 million smokers in France and smoking accounts for 66,000 deaths.
