New on the roads: Longer motorcycle license and compulsory speedometer for e-bikes
Several new features in the field of road traffic will come into force in 2024. A brief overview of the changes to come.
Vaud cantonal police
Every year has its share of new things, and road traffic rules are no exception. The Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) has just compiled a series of new regulations which will come into force during the year 2024. We summarize the essential points for you.
From January 1, fans of large displacement cars, whose cars emit more CO₂ than the authorized standard (118g per kilometer), will have to pay a sanction to the Federal Office of Energy (FOEN) and no longer to the services of OFROU. Please note that the process will now be done exclusively electronically.
Eye exam and longer practical license
You passed your motorcycle license at 16 and you finally have the possibility of registering for a car license? Good news! From March 1, you will no longer need to undergo an eye exam once more. The same goes for people wishing to obtain a professional license category.
Less good news, however, for those who wish to obtain a motorcycle license since the duration of the practical exams is extended. In fact, at least 45 minutes must be spent driving in road traffic, compared to the current minimum of 15.
Speedometers for e-bikes
In accordance with European regulations, new vehicles must be equipped with an accident data recorder and new driver assistance systems from April 1. The goal: to alert the driver in the event of drowsiness or to perform automatic emergency braking in the event of danger.
As for electric bikes, FEDRO now requires that all e-bikes capable of going up to 45 km/h be equipped with a speedometer. This is to improve compliance with speed limits, particularly in zones 20 and 30. This obligation will apply to new electric bicycles from April 1, 2024. Vehicles already in circulation must be equipped with them by April 1, 2027.
Goodbye to the “blues”
The old paper driving licenses, known as “the blue ones”, will no longer be valid from October 31, 2024. Their holders therefore have until next fall to comply and exchange their slip for a plastic card. Otherwise, they might be amended. In Switzerland, in the summer, there were still more than 800,000 old licenses in circulation.
