Participating Teams
NA
The Toronto Defiant have established a dominant trajectory, exemplifying a level of performance rarely seen in Overwatch Esports history. Despite facing formidable contenders in NRG Shock and NTMR, their tenacity has led them to clinch all four NA Stage Championships this season.
Mathematically qualifying first based on Circuit Points, the Defiant will stride into Stockholmsmässan with aspirations for the OWCS Finals Trophy. Though their Dallas Major run fell short of expectations, recent performances have positioned them as a serious threat on the international stage. Daring to underestimate the Defiant comes at your own risk.
Toronto will commence their OWCS World Finals journey at 2 PM CET, facing EMEA’s #2 seed, ENCE.
In 2024, a myriad of teams across all regions flourished in our newly-opened competitive ecosystem, climbing through the ranks to join long-standing organizations in the year’s pinnacle tournaments. An evident highlight is NTMR, our #2 seed from North America.
NTMR surged into the OWCS landscape in Stage 3, quickly rising to prominence within North America’s elite teams. While the organization’s existence is relatively new, the players are seasoned veterans, featuring notable talents like Alex “seeker” Taylor and Boston “Infekted” Fine. Together, they have cultivated a reputation for their dynamic, fast-paced playstyle.
Securing a third-place finish in OWCS Stage 3, the team faced a nail-biting defeat in a Map 5 battle against Toronto. They then came heartbreakingly close to claiming the Stage 4 championship, pushing the Defiant to a thrilling Map Seven in the NA Grand Finals. After engaging with Infekted, we gained insights into his thoughts on the OWCS experience thus far:
“Participating on NTMR has been fantastic; our team’s passion for improvement shines brightly. I’m grateful that our hard work paid off during Stage 4, positioning us as true contenders against Toronto. Our primary focus in the Finals now is defeating the EMEA teams and challenging the Korean teams to assert NA’s competitive presence on the international stage.”
Watch NTMR dive into their first match of the weekend at 1 PM CET against EMEA’s two-time champions, Spacestation Gaming.
NRG Shock, our third seed from NA, are iconic. The team underwent a transformation post-Dallas, reconfiguring their roster with capable players, including versatile flex support Benjamin “Ultraviolet” David and a fearsome tank duo, Kim “Attack” Jun-hwa and Kim “Kellan” Min-jae.
Qualifying for Stockholm through sheer determination, this squad should not be underestimated. General Manager Albert “yeHHH” Yeh and Head Coach Eric “Wheats” Perez boast extensive experience and the ability to elevate their roster’s performance. We spoken with Yeh to hear his reflections before heading to Stockholm:
“We’re solely focused on moving past Stage 4. We recognize our potential is far greater than what was displayed, and we need to refine our gameplay leading up to Stockholm. Fortunately, the new patch brings a breath of fresh air.
Our secret weapon may be that opponents might underestimate us and not prepare for our style thoroughly. With several players boasting LAN experience (Kellan, Attack, Ultraviolet, TR33), we believe anything could happen once we take the stage. We’re poised to outperform our Dallas showing; pressure is nonexistent, thus it’s prime time to rise.”
NRG will face the formidable Crazy Raccoon, champions of the Dallas Major, in their opening match.
EMEA
The top seed from EMEA is Spacestation, who are peaking at precisely the right moment. The recent inclusion of versatile tank Alhumaidi “KSAA” Alruwaili has injected newfound energy into this entrenched roster, offering unparalleled flexibility for any strategic meta.
This roster boasts unmatched synergy; supported by home field advantage, expect the crowd to erupt for their star DPS, William “SparkR” Persson. SparkR shared thoughts on facing the Finals back in his homeland, offering insights on Swedish cuisine:
“Playing in Sweden with fans speaking Swedish might be surreal initially, but the tournament atmosphere will feel familiar. My parents will also be attending to support me in person.”
For culinary delights, he suggested guests enjoy Sweden’s famous meatballs and the MAX burger chain, a local favorite that has piqued the interest of players like Landon!
Spacestation will square off against NA runners-up NTMR in round one.
EMEA’s #2 seed has been entangled in a lively rivalry with Spacestation throughout all of 2024. Competing head-to-head eleven times, the two powerhouses have often dazzled fans. Following an impressive 3-0 triumph for ENCE in Stage 4, the stage was set for an exhilarating clash, with Spacestation utilizing adept strategy adjustments to regain EMEA’s top seed going into Stockholm.
This dynamic roster, teeming with talents like EMEA MVP hopeful Kevin “Kevster” Persson and experienced tank Ilari “Vestola” Vestola, will face a tumultuous journey ahead. Their first opponent, the four-time champion Toronto Defiant, guarantees every match is crucial.
After claiming an early Circuit Points lead from Stage 1, EMEA’s #3 seed has faced hurdles to arrive at the finals. However, Twisted Minds have showcased grit and determination throughout the year, with standout performances from DPS players Ibrahem “Quartz” Alali and Abdulelah “LBBD7” Alfaifi. Opponents should exercise caution against Quartz and his Widowmaker—seriously.
Twisted Minds will initiate the tournament against Asia’s #1 Team Falcons, marking the very first matchup on Friday at 11 AM CET.
Asia
The most riveting narrative throughout the year has been the electrifying showdown between Asia’s preeminent teams, Team Falcons and Crazy Raccoon. Across ten encounters this year, Crazy Raccoon holds a 7-3 advantage (with a whopping 27-10 map score); however, recent games have set the stage for a dramatic face-off in Stockholm.
Team Falcons competed with Crazy Raccoon in the Stage 2 playoffs thrice, securing a 3-1 victory in the Korean regional semifinals. The intensity escalated again in their first match-up during the Asia Main Event, where CRA edged Team Falcons in a nail-biting Map 5. Displaying remarkable tenacity, the Falcons fought their way through multiple five-map matches to snatch a Map 7 victory against the Dallas Major champions, concluding a staggering seventeen maps of Overwatch in a single day.
“Winning the championship in Asia is exhilarating after missing out on Stage 1,” expresses seasoned player Yoo “smurf” Myeong-hwan. “I’m eager to return from Sweden with the championship title. Our focus remains solely on that goal.”
As the #1 seed from Asia, they will face Twisted Minds—the very first match of the tournament—on Friday, November 22, at 11 AM CET!
Meanwhile, Crazy Raccoon, our Dallas Major champions, look to carve out an unforgettable legacy in 2024 within Stockholm. Although challenged in the latter part of the season, the team’s confidence never wavers as they embark on this journey. Dallas Major MVP and CR tank player Park “Junbin” Jun-bin states his excitement to head to Stockholm with the utmost priority on securing the win.
“Our primary goal is victory, but there’s an added thrill in competing. We are ready to put our skills to the test, delivering uniquely exhilarating Crazy Raccoon gameplay in Sweden,” he shared. “The #2 seed won’t dissuade our focus on winning. I genuinely wish for our DPS players to earn MVP honors this time, rather than me!”
Crazy Raccoon will take on NRG Shock for their second match on Friday, November 22.
