The “see you at the airports” might be a good greeting between Belgrano and Talleres fans in 2024. The iconic clubs of the city of Córdoba will face international competitions: the celestial ones, the Sudamericana; the albiazules, the Libertadores. And between April and May they will have an intense schedule to face the group stage of these competitions in which, at least, they will have three trips outside the country.
And, surely, the dates of the matches will coincide during the week, since they are played on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Furthermore, in this first semester, the “B” and the “T” will continue with their paths at the local level, with the Argentine Cup and the League Cup.
The “Belgrano de América” and the “Talleres de América” are a milestone for Córdoba football. And of course their fans are more than enthusiastic. Although this beautiful madness of going to cheer outside of Argentina will require juggling to achieve it: the economic crisis is expected to be more complex than usual and these trips will be expensive. Either way, passion generates creativity. And nothing more passionate and creative than a Córdoba fan. And even more so if their teams are in events as special as the ones that are coming up.
The Libertadores 2024
The highest competition in South American football at the club level will begin on February 7 and end on November 30, with the final at a single venue (not yet determined and with the River field as a candidate for that definition).
Phases 1, 2 and 3, called playoffs and which will have Godoy Cruz as the Argentine representative, will be played from February 7 and will end on March 13.
Then the group stage begins, with the 32 teams. For Argentina there will be River, Talleres, San Lorenzo, Rosario Central and Estudiantes. It will start on April 3 and will end on May 29. In the second week of August (14 and 21) the round of 16 will take place and between September 18 and 25 the quarterfinals will take place.
The semifinals will be played between October 23 and 30 and the grand final will take place on November 30.
Talleres competed three times in the contest. In 2002 he joined the group with América from Mexico, Cortuluá from Colombia and River and might not advance to the round of 16. In 2019, it entered the qualifying phase. In the first instance they eliminated Sao Paulo (2-0 in Córdoba and 0-0 in Brazil) and fell to Palestino (2-2 at the Mario Alberto Kempes stadium and 1-2 in Chile). In 2022 he shared a group with Flamengo, Sporting Cristal and Universidad Católica. And they came out second, with wins over the Chileans and Peruvians and a tie with the Brazilians in Córdoba. It only fell in Rio de Janeiro. In the round of 16, they eliminated Colón (1-1 here and 2-0 in Santa Fe), but remained in the quarterfinals once morest Vélez (2-3 in Liniers and 0-1 in Córdoba).
The dollar prizes that Conmebol will award to the participants were not published. The reference is those of 2023, although season following season there are increases. Last year, for participating in the elimination phase 1, the payment was 400 thousand dollars. For phase 2, 500 thousand. For phase 3, 600 thousand. For the group stage, three million (plus 300 thousand dollars per game won). For the round of 16, 1,250,000. By quarters, 1,700,000. For semis, 2,300,000. For finalist, seven million. And the champion kept 18 million.
The draw for the group stage will take place at the end of March. Talleres will be in pot 3, along with San Lorenzo, The Strongest, Universitario, Deportivo Táchira, Rosario Central, Alianza Lima and Millonarios.
The other drums? Number 1 has Fluminense, Palmeiras, River, Flamengo, Gremio, Peñarol, Sao Paulo and Liga Universitaria de Quito. The 2nd to Atlético Mineiro, Independiente del Valle, Libertad, Cerro Porteño, Estudiantes de La Plata, Barcelona de Guayaquil, Bolívar and Junior de Barranquilla. The 4th to Caracas, Liverpool, Huachipato, Cobresal, winner 1 of phase 3, winner 2 of phase 3, winner 3 of phase 3 and winner 4 of phase 3.
One of the issues that Talleres already knows is that it will not be able to face Argentine teams in the group zone, with the exception of Godoy Cruz (if the Mendoza team advances and falls into the “T” group, they might face each other).
The objective of Workshops? Go as far as possible. As always, as your story demands.
In short, two of the most popular clubs in the city of Córdoba will experience pure adrenaline in 2024.
The South American 2024
Boca is the great candidate in the competition. After losing the final of the Libertadores 2023, the Xeneizes will seek to repeat the title they achieved in 2005 in this competition.
And Belgrano will be there, following his great campaign in the Professional League season, in which he finished 11th in the annual table, which also allowed him to achieve permanence without problems.
In addition to “B” and Boca, the other representatives will be Racing, Defensa y Justicia, Lanús and Argentinos Juniors.
The draw for the group stage of the Sudamericana will take place in Luque, Paraguay, on the same day as that of the Libertadores. That is, at the end of March.
The activity will begin with phase 1, on March 6 to access the groups and will culminate on Saturday, November 23 with the final at a single venue.
After the first stage, the group stage will be reached, which will be played between April 3 and May 29, just like the Libertadores.
The first and second of each group enter the next phase. The seconds go to the round of 16 (July 17 and 24), while the first await in the round of 16, where the third from the Libertadores group stage will join.
The head to head round of 16 starts on August 14 and continues until the 21st of that month. The quarterfinals will be between September 18 and 25. The semifinals will be played between October 23 and 30. And the final, with a venue that has not yet been confirmed, will be on November 23, just a week before the definition of the Libertadores.
How much Conmebol will pay the clubs for participation in the Sudamericana 2024 is not defined. In 2023 each club will keep 900 thousand dollars for the group stage and 300 thousand for each match won. 550 thousand for the eighth, 600 thousand for the one who reached the quarterfinals. 800 thousand so they reached the semis. The champion took eight million; the runner-up, two million. In general, Conmebol increases are between 20 and 25 percent.
This will be Belgrano’s fourth participation in the Sudamericana. In 2013, when the tournament was played in eliminatory brackets, the “B” was eliminated once morest Vélez: they beat him 1-0 in Alberdi but lost 0-2 in Buenos Aires. Then, in 2015, the one who ended the celestial illusion was Lanús. They tied 1-1 at Kempes and Granate beat 5-1 in their stadium. In 2016, Belgrano eliminated Estudiantes in the first round and then ran into Coritiba. The thing regarding the celestial fans was historic: they mobilized five thousand people to Brazil, where they won 2-1. Later, in Córdoba, they fell 1-2 and lost 4-3 on penalties.
Belgrano’s objective? Go as far as possible. For his finances and for his expansion process in the national and, of course, international elite.
