Players from the American professional baseball (MLB) teams LA Dodgers and San Diego Padres, including superstars Shohei Ohtani, Darvish, and Ha-Seong Kim, will visit Seoul to play in the opening game. As approximately 100,000 people are expected to flock to watch the game, the city of Seoul has begun safety management.
The city of Seoul announced on the 12th that it is preparing for the ‘2024 Major League (MLB) World Tour Seoul Series’ on the 20th and 21st by spending about 2.39 billion won to completely improve the stadium and strengthen safety. Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon also visited Gocheok Sky Dome in Guro-gu, the stadium, on this day to check crowd management measures and inspect the results of Gocheok Dome facility repairs.
The city of Seoul repaired or replaced various facilities to create an environment similar to that of an American professional baseball stadium. First, the stadium turf was completely replaced with artificial turf with American shock absorption rate (G-max) and flatness. All ground lighting has also been replaced with LED, making it brighter. The visiting team’s locker room and cafeteria were also improved to ensure that players can play in optimal condition. In addition, the skybox facilities were supplemented and a photo zone (pedestrian plaza) and green garden (front plaza) were created around the stadium to create an environment where visitors can comfortably watch the game.
The city and the Seoul Facilities Corporation plan to establish a close cooperation system with related organizations such as the host MLB, Guro-gu Office, police, and fire departments, and support on-site safety management, crowd management, and emergency rescue. To ensure the safety of spectators, MLB will deploy approximately 400 people inside and outside the stadium during the game period, which is more than three times the number of safety guards in a typical professional baseball game. In preparation for any emergency, all visitors will be subject to identity verification and security screening. Related organizations, including the city, district, and police, will also deploy approximately 150 additional personnel.
In this Seoul Series, the LA Dodgers, featuring superstar Shohei Ohtani, and the San Diego Padres, featuring Kim Ha-seong and Ko Woo-seok, will play the MLB opening two-game series. Prior to this, both teams are scheduled to have practice games with the Kiwoom Heroes, LG Twins, and the Korean national baseball team, so baseball stars from Korea, the United States, and Japan will be in attendance.
Mayor Oh said, “Exchange between MLB and the Korean baseball world has begun in earnest. “I hope that this game will be played well and that the MLB Opening Seoul Series will be held every year in the future,” he said. “As this is an event that attracts many visitors at once, we will do our best to manage crowds when entering and exiting to create a perfect game with no safety issues.”
