2024 college football rankings: Georgia, Ohio State top; Nebraska among top 25

2024-09-02 06:13:52

Kirby Smart’s Georgia Bulldogs open the 2024 season with three points. Ohio State, meanwhile, trails a MAC team that hasn’t won more than two games in a season since 2018.

At this stage, at this level, style matters. When Ole Miss, the third-best SEC team in the country, was able to put up numbers against Furman, Ohio State couldn’t afford a slow start.

When Texas is able to crush Colorado’s muck and hit buzzer-beating shots before taking on the Buckeyes’ most hated foe, Ohio State can’t look like a program that took time to form.

Ohio State University’s standards are those set by the state of Georgia. And the Buckeyes haven’t encountered that yet.

Dominance. excellence. Perfect without hesitation. That’s what I’m asking.

Here are my top 25 rankings:

Editor’s note: This set of rankings reflects Florida State’s Week 0 loss to Georgia Tech. It will be updated following Florida State’s game against Boston College on Monday night.

1. Georgia (1-0)

First week results: beat Clemson, 34-3

Georgia has won 43 of its last 45 games. Its only loss during this stretch was to Nick Saban’s Alabama program, and Saban is no longer at Alabama.

Georgia earned the right to become the No. 1 team in the nation with a statement win among the top 25 teams to win as many national championships as the Dawgs in the CFP era.

2. Ohio State University (1-0)

First week results: beat Akron 52-6

I expect Ohio State to shut out one of the worst teams in the country. Instead, they trailed Akron 3-0 and allowed twice as many points (6) to the Zips as Georgia allowed Clemson all day.

Buckeyes should pull the zipper open.

3. Texas (1-0)

First week results: beat Colorado State 52-0

Despite losing two of their top three backs to start the season, the Longhorns look like a team hoping to contend with over 500 yards of offense and garbage-time entertainment from Archie Manning at quarterback. SEC Championship team. Texas looks like a team that can beat Michigan State in Ann Arbor.

4. become a miss (1-0)

First week results: Defeat Furman, 76-0

In the first half alone, Jackson Dart threw for 418 yards (22 of 27) and five touchdowns. Wide receiver Tre Harris had eight catches for 179 yards and two scores.

Mississippi State scored 73 points in the first three quarters and totaled 772 yards. Lane Kiffin is not idle.

5. alabama (1-0)

First week results: beat Western Kentucky, 63-0

The Hilltoppers hit rock bottom against Alabama. It was the Crimson Tide’s biggest win since 1973. The team did not do this.

True freshman wide receiver Ryan Williams had a stellar performance with two catches for 139 yards and two touchdowns. Michigan State transfer Keon Sabu had two interceptions in the first half.

Bigger loss: Alabama’s Nick Saban or Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh?

Bigger loss: Alabama's Nick Saban or Michigan's Jim Harbaugh?

6. Our Lady (1-0)

First week results: Beat Texas A&M, 23-13

Notre Dame is one of four programs ranked in the top 25 after the first week. project, but the Aggies may be their toughest opponent all season.

Marcus Freeman’s team beat Texas A&M by the same margin as No. 3 Oregon beat FCS Idaho . Make it count, duck.

7. University of Southern California (1-0)

First week results: beat LSU, 27-20

Miller Moss turned the final minutes of Trojans’ Top 25 game against LSU into Miller Time and ended it with another on Sunday night Finished the game with a strong performance: 27 of 36 for 378 yards and a touchdown.

Right now, USC feels like the team we thought Oregon State would be after Week 1.

8. penn state university (1-0)

First week results: beat West Virginia 34-12

Penn State fans know they have a top-notch defense. They wanted to see improvement from Drew Allar and the offense, and they got that on Saturday. Alar had an impressive win in Week 1, lighting up the Mountaineer defense for 216 yards and three touchdowns. James Franklin’s move to hire former Kansas player Andy Kotelnicki looks like a home run.

9. oregon (1-0)

First week results: beat Idaho State, 24-14

The Ducks led 17-14 late in the fourth quarter. Idaho State defeated an FBS opponent last year and finished 9-4, but the opponent was Nevada and not one of the two programs selected to play in the Big Ten Championship Game later this year.

The Ducks’ slow start against Boise State in Week 2 may be difficult to overcome. Broncos running back Ashton Jeanty rushed for 267 yards and six touchdowns in Week 1 against Georgia Southern. ) didn’t mince words in his assessment of Jeandi, who is a top 100 superstar in my 2024 rankings.

“Obviously, it goes without saying, but Ashton Jeanty is the best player in the country,” Danielson said. “That was on full display tonight.”

10. missouri (1-0)

First week results: Defeated Murray State 51-0

Missouri’s slogan should be “What can the NIL do for you?” It could turn fast-food Brady Cook into a gridiron cook. It takes the burden off you (Luther) against smaller teams. The Tigers won’t play a team ranked on this list until Oct. 26 against Alabama.

11. Oklahoma (1-0)

First week results: beat Temple, 51-3

Oklahoma State outscored FBS opponents 51-3. Missouri State outscored FCS opponents 51-0. Still, people are treating OU like they usually treat Mizzou, and Mizzou like they usually treat OU, regardless of history. Last year, the Sooners won 10 games and the Tigers won 11.

12. Utah (1-0)

First week results: beat Southern Utah 49-0

The Utes’ next score would be their first all year. Utah is the only team in the Big 12 that can do that after Week 1.

13. tennessee (1-0)

First week results: beat Chattanooga, 69-3

The Volunteers have established themselves as a must-see this season, and Chattanooga’s opening rush surprised me.

14. Michigan (1-0)

First week results: Defeated Fresno State 30-10

Quarterback Davis Warren leads Alex Orji. Although both played in the game, it was clear that head coach Sheron Moore and offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell believed Warren was more capable of running the offense. Still, he doesn’t claim to be a signal-caller who understands the offense as well as his predecessor.

Warren’s 118 yards (15-for-25) with a touchdown and an interception weren’t ideal. Meanwhile, Kalel Mullings may be wondering why he’s not the RB1, as he led the rushing attack with 92 yards on 15 carries while EA Sports “College Football 25” Cover Athlete More Donovan Edwards rushed for just 27 yards on 11 carries.

Defending national champion Michigan enters its own stadium as an underdog on Saturday against Texas (12 p.m. ET, FOX and the FOX Sports app). My question is: What will the Wolverines do?

I just hope Texas fans show up to Michigan on Saturday with a picture of Bill Engvall on a burnt orange flyer and hand them out to fans around Michigan Stadium.

15. Oklahoma (1-0)

First week results: Defeated South Dakota State 44-20

Oklahoma State showed Coach Prime’s Colorado program what Big 12 teams do against top FCS opponents — double them and add the remainder.

16. Miami (Florida) (1-0)

First week results: beat Florida 41-17

Cam Ward is Florida’s best player. The former Washington State quarterback completed 26 of 35 passes for 385 yards, three touchdowns and a pick, leading the Canes to a 41-17 victory over the Gators in Gainesville.

Miami’s defense recorded three sacks and two fumbles, shocking Graham Mertz. Yes, Montrell Johnson broke the 100-yard rushing record, but he was the only one who wasn’t beaten like a dusty sheet.

17. Louisiana State University (0-1)

First week results: Lost to USC, 27-20

Despite leading 17-14 in the fourth quarter, Brian Kelly’s Tigers lost to USC on Sunday night, marking the third consecutive year they’ve lost to start the season. The good news is Garrett Nusmeier is the real deal. He completed 29 of 38 passes for 304 yards and had two touchdowns and an interception on the final play of the game.

18. kansas (1-0)

First week results: beat Tennessee Martin, 41-6

Kansas State gave the Skyhawks the salary guarantee they deserved. DJ Giddens rushed for his fifth consecutive 100-yard game, and former Colorado State running back Dylan Edwards rushed for a touchdown, which was an added bonus.

19. Georgia Institute of Technology (2-0)

First week results: Defeated Georgia State 35-12

Brent Key’s team shocked the college football world with an upset 24-21 victory over Florida State in Week 0. (Georgia State), Haynes King finished the game with 275 yards and two touchdowns.

Georgia Tech’s defense held the Panthers to just one touchdown all week and held the Seminoles to less than 300 yards of total offense. This defense deserves your attention.

20. kansas (1-0)

First week results: beat Lindenwood, 48-3

The Jayhawks scored 27 points in the second quarter alone and racked up 530 yards (331 of them) in the win.

twenty one. Florida (1-0)

First week results: vs. Boston College (Monday, 7:30 p.m. ET)

Please check back for updates.

twenty two. Clemson (0-1)

First week results: Lost to Georgia, 34-3

Garrett Riley’s offense has scored just 10 points in two games against Georgia. Dabo Swinney ruefully admitted that Clemson fans have every right to be angry about how the Tigers have been fathered by their daddy, the Georgia Dawgs.

twenty three. Arizona (1-0)

First week results: Defeated New Mexico State 61-39

Wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan had 304 receiving yards against New Mexico. It’s the second-best game in Big 12 history, with Arizona’s first game in the Big 12 coming on Saturday night.

twenty four. Iowa (1-0)

First week results: beat Illinois State 40-0

Iowa is averaging just 15.4 points per game in 2023. On Saturday, they gained 492 yards and limited the Redbirds to 189 yards. It was the second time in three years that Iowa State scored more than 40 points, 34 of which came in the second half.

25. nebraska (1-0)

First week results: beat North Dakota State 21-3

Not only does Dylan Raiola look like a five-star quarterback for one of the proudest programs in college football history, he does it Jeff Sims And what Henrich Haarberg will try to do as a starter in 2023 – take care of the football. Raiola’s next mistake will be his first.
