2024 Changes to Vehicle Insurance: Green Card Removal and Registration Tax Increase

2023-12-09 16:00:25

The green card on the windshield will officially disappear in 2024. A decision taken 2 years ago, in 2021, but which would only take effect during the year 2024. This card was introduced in the 1950s and made mandatory in 1986, as proof of vehicle insurance, but which is no longer useful with the advent of the automobile insurance tracking system.

Indeed, in 2024, the presence of the green card on the windshield of a vehicle will no longer be necessary to certify its insurance. Verification will now be done directly from the insured vehicle file, a more reliable method for detecting cases of fraud.

From April 1, 2024, the green card will disappear

From April 1, 2024, the green sticker on cars will no longer be necessary, because there is now a centralized file of insured vehicles (FVA) which will make it possible to quickly and reliably check whether a vehicle is indeed insured. This decision aims to combat fraud, because some people falsify their sticker. Additionally, it will help reduce the environmental impact of car insurance.

As a reminder, since 2019, insurance companies are required to provide information to the file of insured vehicles. The latter contains various data, such as the car registration number, the name of the insurer, the insurance contract number and the period during which the insurance is valid.

What about the crisis card, what changes for 2024?

With the start of the new year, the regional tax on registration certificates will be increased. From January 1, 2024, registration cards will therefore cost more, and the increase rates vary from one region to another. Furthermore, the power to increase or not this tax is held by the regional councils: “ The regional councils actually have the power to set the price of the tax horse as they see fit, without exceeding 60 euros. », recalls Ouest France in its update on the question.

It must be said that this tax is among the most lucrative in terms of revenue for the regions and its lasting decline in recent years (tumbling from 108 million euros in 2019 to 82 million euros in 2023) has significantly affected the balances budgetary measures at locality levels.
