2024 British GP: Testing for possible rain during the race, with Mercedes in command

Los Free Practice 3 of the British Grand Prix apparently served no purpose, but considering the weather forecast for the rest of the weekend, it might become vital. The prediction indicates that there might be wet moments during qualifying (4 PM in Spain), but especially for the race on Sunday (4:00 p.m.), where the probability of precipitation exceeds 60%.

So things have all had one valuable session with the intermediate tires (Pirelli green band), to assess the car. As in Canada, Mercedes and McLaren have shown strong performance in these conditions (between 10 and 12 degrees ambient and regarding 15 on the ground) and humidity while Ferrari and Aston are limited and Red Bull, with Verstappen aiming for victory, as they do in dry, hot or any weather.

George Russell beat Lewis Hamilton by just 0.035 and Lando Norris by 0.185, in what seems to be the trio of favorites for a pole position that will likely be taken by Max, as it often is in these conditions.

The three-time champion made a spectacular spin a few minutes following the session started. He finished fifth, 0.8 seconds behind Russell. The rain gave him the chance to achieve his second pole position and his second victory of the season this Sunday.

Sainz, fourth

Carlos Sainz was the best of the two Ferraris in these difficult conditions and finished fourth, 0.6 seconds behind the Mercedes, while Leclerc was sixth, almost a second behind. They don’t seem like pole contenders with such low temperatures, but with Ferrari, anything is possible, even for themselves.

As for Fernando Alonso, he was able to get into the top 10, which seems to be the main goal in qualifying this weekend. Reaching Q3 once more and scoring points on Sunday. And that wouldn’t be bad at all, considering where we’ve come from.
