After months, even years, of training and technological developments, the 6 challenges entered in the 2024 America’s Cup will finally compete from Friday to Sunday in Vilanova (Spain) during preliminary regattas.
For these first regattas, the organizer of the next America’s Cup, which will take place from October 12, 2024 in Barcelona, has required the challenges involved to participate aboard an AC40, a one-design scale model of the AC75 used next year.
For the 6 competing countries, the challenge this weekend is above all to measure themselves: a victory in the 2-boat final on Sunday does not bring anything in sporting terms.
The cream of the sailors
In addition to the Swiss from Alinghi, the Italians from Luna Rossa, the French challenge, the New Zealand “defender”, the British from Ineos and the American Magic team count in their ranks a plethora of experienced sailors.
At the helm of the Kiwi AC40, sailor Peter Burling – youngest winner of the Cup in 2017 at just 26 years old – puts his title on the line for the third time, while Sir Ben Ainslie, quadruple gold medalist in sailing Olympic, hopes to lead Great Britain to its first coronation.
