As the NHL Board of Governors met Wednesday in New York, some preliminary information was released regarding the potential increase in the salary cap next season.
Commissioner Gary Bettman clarified at the conclusion of the meeting that a “very preliminary” estimate of the ceiling for the 2024-2025 calendar is “somewhere between $87 and $88 million.”
In 2019-20, the NHL salary cap was $81.5 million. It remained unchanged during the 2020 and 2021 off-seasons, before experiencing a slight increase of $1 million in the summer of 2022.
Furthermore, Bettman clarified that the league is not planning further expansion in the short term, before adding that potential markets continue to express interest in acquiring a club.
Our colleague Pierre LeBrun wrote on Wednesday that “if we were to read between the lines, it seems more and more plausible to me that[une expansion] possibly occur.”
Finally, the commissioner announced that he had no new information to provide regarding the investigation conducted by the NHL regarding the 2018 edition of Junior Team Canada.
Thus, it seems that no announcement is expected in the short term.
