The Swiss women’s team will face the winner of the match between Wales and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the second round of the 2023 World Cup play-offs on Tuesday, October 11.
Welsh and Bosnian women will have faced each other five days earlier for the first round of the play-offs with a view to qualifying for the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
The Swiss seem to have benefited from a favorable draw. In the FIFA rankings, Switzerland is ranked 21st while Wales (30th) and especially Bosnia and Herzegovina (63rd) are ranked much further.
A success almost synonymous with qualification
A success in the play-off would almost guarantee Switzerland a ticket to a second participation in the World Cup following 2015. Only two of the three winners of the 2nd round of the play-offs will be directly qualified for the final tournament from July 20 to August 20, 2023. Switzerland, thanks to its good results in qualification, should however be spared the final intercontinental play-off, which will award the last place in the World Cup.
