The 2023 Seoul International Book Fair, the largest book festival in Korea, will be held at COEX in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul from the 14th to the 18th.
The 65th book fair since the first held in 1954 is the first international book fair to be held since the COVID-19 quarantine measures were completely lifted.
This year’s book fair is participated by 530 publishers (360 domestic and 170 overseas), writers and related organizations from 36 countries under the theme of ‘NONHUMAN, beyond non-humans’. Famous foreign writers such as Yann Martel, winner of the British Booker Prize, and Viet Thanh Nguyen, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, will visit Korea, and a large number of officials from the Sharjah Islands Authority of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Canada, the ‘Spotlight Country’, will also visit Korea.
215 famous writers and speakers from home and abroad participate and meet readers through 170 programs including exhibitions, side events, lectures, and seminars.
Publishers and culture officials from Sharjah, the Alex Reed country, introduce various cultures such as Arabic language, literature, and art through book talks, book exhibitions, and cultural performances at lecture halls and Alex Reed country pavilions within the book fair.
Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, Director of the Sharjah Islands Authority, said, “The role of culture is most important in shaping the relationship between a city and a country.” By encouraging mutual translation of literature, I hope it will serve as an opportunity to promote exchanges between the two countries in knowledge, literature and art.”
Among foreign writers, Yann Martel, who won the Man Booker Prize for ‘The Story of Pi’, will visit Korea for the first time and share his thoughts on human creativity in a lecture on ‘What is human?’
Viet Thanh Nguyen, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book “Sympathizers,” gave a lecture on “Asian Diaspora and American Literature,” while sociologist Nikolai Schultz gave a seminar on “Earth Disease: Sense and Think regarding a Sick Earth.” open Korean-American novelist Kim Joo-hye also meets Korean readers.
