The SAG Awards ceremony will be broadcast live for the first time this year on the platform of the global streaming giant Netflix, and should thus benefit from renewed notoriety.
“Oppenheimer”, a tortuous portrait of the designer of the atomic bomb, directed by Christopher Nolan, was nominated in several categories, including “best ensemble of actors”, the most popular prize of the SAG Awards.
Actors Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt are also selected individually by their peers.
Hailed by critics, the three-hour biopic, which earned nearly a billion dollars, is poised to become a favorite in the Oscar race.
“Barbie”, another summer box office success and true cultural and commercial phenomenon, is also selected in the “best ensemble of actors” category, with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling also being nominated individually.
Martin Scorsese’s historical fresco “Killers of the Flower Moon” received three individual nominations, although actor Leonardo DiCaprio was notably absent.
On the small screen side, the series “Succession” received five nominations, followed by “The Bear”, “The Last of Us” and “Ted Lasso” which each received four.
Barbra Streisand in the spotlight
The SAG Awards are voted on by actors and are therefore considered a very good indicator for the Oscars.
Actors constitute the most important college within the Academy of Cinema Arts and Sciences which awards the prestigious golden statuettes.
The 30th SAG Awards will be held in Los Angeles on February 24.
During this evening, the union will present an honorary award to actress and singer Barbra Streisand for her entire career.
The speeches given during the gala will certainly refer to the strikes in Hollywood which marked the year 2023 and led to the immobilization of the cinema industry.
An agreement was finally ratified in November between studios and the actors’ union, ending a several-month strike.
