(CNN) — The 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to a trio of scientists who worked on the discovery and development of quantum dots, used in LED lights and television screens, as well as by surgeons when removing cancerous tissue.

Moungi Bawendi, Louis Brus and Alexei Ekimov are the winners, the committee announced this Wednesday in Stockholm.

But the committee inadvertently published the names of the three scientists hours before the official announcement.

Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet published a copy of an email it said came from the academy, Archyde.com reported.

Johan Aqvist, chairman of the Nobel committee in Chemistry, told Archyde.com: “It is a mistake by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Our meeting starts at 9:30 a.m. Central Time (7:30 a.m. GMT). ), so no decision has been made yet. The winners have not been selected.”

Bawendi, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Brus, a professor emeritus at Columbia University, are Americans. Ekimov is Russian and works for Nanocrystals Technology Inc.
