The 2023 NFL Draft will be held in Kansas City. Two German hopes are also in the draw. Everything you need to know regarding draft order, times and top players from college.
The NFL team selection process brings excitement and anticipation to football fans around the world. After the spectacular event in Las Vegas in 2022, this year’s draft is in the city of reigning Super Bowl winners Kansas City. A total of 259 young college talents will be selected in seven rounds from the 32 NFL teams.

When does the 2023 draft start and how will it work?
The draft begins on Thursday evening in the US and for fans in Germany, the first round starts on Friday (April 28) at around 2 a.m. There are seven rounds in which drafting takes place – the rounds are divided into three large time slots. However, the most important day is the first: This is where the top stars in round 1 are selected.
Here is an overview of the draft times:
- Round 1: Friday (April 28), 2 a.m. (CEST)
- Round 2 and 3: Saturday (April 29), 1 a.m. (CEST)
- Rounds 4 to 7: Saturday (April 29), 6 p.m. (CEST)
Teams have limited windows during the draft to make their picks. They have ten minutes in the first round, seven minutes in the second round and five minutes in rounds three to seven. The last pick of the draft, also known as “Mr. Irrelevant”, is the last player to be selected in the seventh round.
These are the top players in the draft
The order in which teams draft is determined by their placement in the previous season. The Chicago Bears had their worst win-loss record last season but will give up their first pick. Instead, the Carolina Panthers are the first team to choose their dream player to find their quarterback solution for the next few years.
There are several interesting quarterbacks, including Bryce Young (Alabama), CJ Stroud (Ohio State), Anthony Richardson (Florida), and Will Levis (Kentucky) being traded as potential first-round picks.
In addition to quarterbacks, there are other promising prospects in the 2023 draft. Bijan Robinson (running back/Texas) is considered one of the most promising running back talents since Saquon Barkley, the 2018 New York Giants pick of the second pick. There are also exciting defensive players like Jalen Carter (Defensive Tackle/Georgia), Will Anderson Jr. (Edge/Alabama), Tyree Wilson (Edge/Texas A&M), Devon Witherspoon (Cornerback/Illinois) and Christian Gonzalez (Cornerback/Oregon), that are being considered by NFL teams.

Two German hopes and one special feature
A notable feature this year is that the first round only has 31 picks, as the Miami Dolphins were stripped of their first-round draft pick over allegations of “tampering.” The team has been accused of negotiating with Tom Brady and former Saints head coach Sean Payton even though they were still under contracts with other teams.
Interesting for German football fans: There are also two German players in the 2023 NFL Draft. Kilian Zierer (Offensive Line/Auburn) and Lorenz Metz (Offensive Line/Cincinnati) have hopes of being drafted this year and gaining a foothold in the NFL.
