The ‘2023 Korea-Pacific Islands Summit’ will be held in Korea for two days from the 29th. This is the first multilateral summit to be held in Korea since the launch of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration, and the first time a summit between Korea and Pacific Island Countries is held.

In a written briefing on the 25th, the Office of the President announced that “President Seok-Yeol Yoon invited the leaders of 18 member countries of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) and the Secretary-General of the PIF as husband and wife to this summit.” The PIF consists of 14 Pacific Island Countries (Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu) and two French islands (French Polynesia and New Caledonia). It is made up of Dominions, Australia and New Zealand.

At the plenary session to be held on the 29th, the participating leaders will discuss ways to expand cooperation between Korea and the Pacific Island Countries and strengthen cooperation on the international stage. On the evening of the 29th, an official dinner hosted by President Yoon and First Lady Kim Kun-hee will be held.

On the 30th, leaders of Pacific Island Countries will move to Busan and visit the North Port area, which is the stage for hosting the Busan World Expo. In addition, President Yoon is scheduled to hold individual bilateral meetings with heads of state of regarding 10 countries who have visited Korea.

The reason Korea pays attention to the Pacific Islands is that they are regarded as key points in the strategic competition between the US and China in line with the Indo-Pacific Strategy announced at the end of last year. The United States also held its first Pacific Islands Summit last year.

Presidential Office Spokesperson Lee Do-woon said, “Through this summit, the implementation of the Indo-Pacific Strategy announced by the Korean government last year will begin in earnest.” It will serve as an opportunity to strengthen responsible contribution diplomacy.”
