The 12th round of F1 in 2023, the Hungarian GP qualifying was held on the 22nd local time.

The local Hungaroring was sunny and dry, continuing from FP3 and F2 Race 1. In this qualifying session, Q1 is hard, Q2 is medium, and Q3 is soft.

At the beginning of the 18th minute of qualifying Q1, all cars went out onto the track on hard tires. Due to the difficulty, each driver alternates between attack laps and energy storage laps while staying on the track. The two AlphaTauri cars, both Yuki Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo, set a time once, but immediately returned to the pits and left the pits with 10 minutes remaining.

There were some cases where the time was canceled due to track limit violations, but each driver aimed to shorten the time in the final stage.

In the final attack, each driver improved their times while there was traffic in sector 3. Yuki Tsunoda failed to improve his time in Sector 3 in the final attack, and unfortunately was eliminated in Q1. Daniel Ricciardo, on the other hand, improved his time on his final attack and advanced to Q2 in 15th place. The time difference between Tsunoda and Ricardo was 0.013 seconds.

In the end, the five cars that dropped out of Q1 were Alexander Albon, Tsunoda, George Russell, Kevin Magnussen and Logan Sargent.

In the following Q2, all cars will be equipped with medium tires. Here, Max Verstappen violates the track limit at Turn 5 on his first attack, and his time is deleted. After 14 cars set the time, only Verstappen entered the attack with the remaining 4 minutes without time and finally set the second fastest time.

Some drivers did not participate in the last attack because they wanted to keep the medium tires until the race. In the end, Carlos Sainz, Esteban Ocon, Ricciardo, Lance Stroll, and Pierre Gasly, whose time was canceled due to track limit violations, did not reach 10th place.

And Q3, which decides the top 10 line-up, competes for time on soft tires. Each driver completed their first lap, with Verstappen leading in 1:16.612. Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris followed. With four minutes remaining, each car heads out for the final attack.

While Verstappen was unable to improve the time, Hamilton pushed last and scored a 1:16.609 to win pole position at the last minute. Hamilton became the pole for the first time in two years since the 21st round in 2021 Saudi Arabia GP, and it will be the 104th PP in total.

Second place was Verstappen with a difference of 0.003 seconds. McLaren cars occupied the second row with Norris in 3rd and Oscar Piastri in 4th.

5th is Chow Guanyu, 6th is Charles Leclerc, 7th is Valtteri Bottas, 8th is Fernando Alonso, 9th is Sergio Perez and 10th is Nico Hulkenberg.

Also, in qualifying this time, the compounds were used in order, so the more advanced the drivers in qualifying, the less new tire stock there will be in the race. It will be interesting to see how the tire strategy changes in the race.
