The ‘2023 Hinzpeter International Reporting Award’ awards ceremony, now in its third year, will be held at the main auditorium of the Library of Congress on the 8th. This award is Korea’s International Reporting Award, named following Jürgen Hinzpeter, a German video journalist who reported to the world the horrors of the civilian massacre by the military dictatorship that took place in Gwangju in May 1980, and has been awarded since 2021. This year’s major award categories (3 in competition, 1 non-competition) were won by works that looked at the reality of the Russia-Ukraine war from various angles. The one-hour documentary ‘Inside Russia: Putin’s Domestic War’ was selected for the grand prize, ‘The World at a Crossroads Award’. The reporting team of Gesvin Mohammad, Alexandra Odinova, and Vasily Kolotilov covered the crisis of democracy in Russia, where anti-war and critical voices are suppressed through criminal law, through on-site reporting and interviews. The judging panel commented that this report “vividly recorded and denounced the voices of criticism once morest the Vladimir Putin regime within Russia and resistance once morest the war in Ukraine, which had not been reported due to the ban and withdrawal of foreign reporters.” In addition, he added, “The journalistic spirit of reporting for democracy, human rights, peace, and freedom of the press despite the risk of being arrested and punished just like the reporters (who responded to the report) is in line with Hinzpeter’s spirit in Gwangju in May.” In the ‘News section’, there is ‘Bahmut’, which captures the lives of citizens who continue to live without refuge in Bachmut, Ukraine, in the middle of the battlefield, and in the ‘Special section’, there is a picture of Russia taking over and exploiting the Central African Republic through the mercenary group Wagner Group. ‘Russia’s Soft Power in the Central African Republic’, which delves into its imperialistic behavior, was selected. The ‘May Gwangju Award’, an award of merit, went to former Soviet reporters who covered the Chernobyl nuclear power plant explosion in 1986. The video reporters of the three award-winning works that swept the competition sectors attended a special seminar held on the 7th at the Golden Mouse Hall of the Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) headquarters under the theme of ‘War and Humanity’ and testified regarding their stories following reporting.
